| In a small village in Turkey lived a family with three grown daughters still unmarried even though they were well
past marriageable age. Much to their father's dismay the girls were unable to marry because he could not give them
propper dowries.
Another man in the same small village wanted to become a bishop. He heard of this father's dilemma. For St. Nicholas
to become a bishop he had to give up all his earthly possessions. So as fate would have it, St. Nicholas carried
three bags of gold coins and dropped them down the chimney of the poor family. Amazingly the coins landed in each of
the girl's stockings which were hanging from the mantel of the fireplace to dry. Although St. Nicholas was being
very quiet as not to be seen the girl's father discovered him. St. Nicholas pleaded with the man to keep his secret
but within two days the entire village heard of the gifts.
This is one of many Christmas Legends of St.Nick and the Christmas stocking tradition.
