Rustic is a move towards a simpler time. It is an effort to return to our roots, and remember the raw and primitive nature that lurks beneath our civilized visage.

Natural stone is a material which embodies this relationship. Formed in the belly of the earth, it is ripped from the sides of mountains through human skill. Sometimes stone can be tamed. Polished marble glistens like a domesticated show dog, its elegant demeanor looking down on the rustic appearance of other more primitive stones. Even a material as wild as slate can be polished, its rough and exotic textures being flattened into a glistening plane, its colors dimmed from lost dimensionality.

However when it is left in a raw, clefted state, natural stone has more personality than any other material in the world. You can have two floors made from exactly the same material, and they both can look completely different. That is the kind of individuality you can only achieve in the natural world.
